Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammoplasty, is typically performed to help patients remove excess tissue in the breast to have a proportional look and feel or reduce neck and back pain.
BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY
Many women with larger breasts often wonder if boob reduction surgery is right for them. There are many things to consider when choosing any surgery, and breast reductions are no different.
Knowing your options, ideal outcomes, benefits, and risks is critical to making the right decision. Our aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon, Dr. Robert Garza, specializes in breast procedures, including reductions. He would love to consult with you to see if this is a good option for you.
HOW DOES BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY WORK?
The goal of reduction mammoplasty is to reduce the size, shape, and weight of the breast(s).
A breast reduction procedure, commonly called a reduction mammoplasty, removes extra fat, breast tissue, and skin from the breast. The plastic surgeon then reshapes the area for a more proportional look and feel.
Liposuction can also be performed during the procedure if the plastic surgeon sees fit. Your breast surgeon will discuss your options beforehand to see which techniques are best for your specific case.
The surgery can often be performed in an outpatient setting in our Tennessee Surgery Center in Nashville. There are many benefits of outpatient surgery, like going home the same day! Find out if this procedure is right for you by scheduling a consultation with Dr. Garza.
WHY CONSIDER A BREAST REDUCTION?
SURGERY RECOVERY
After the procedure, your physician will wrap your breasts in gauze bandages. You must also wear a surgical bra for a few weeks to support your breasts during healing. The bra also helps reduce swelling. Additionally, you may need drainage tubes for a few days to let any extra blood or fluid drain out after the operation.
You may experience pain during your breast reduction surgery recovery. To reduce pain, your physician may prescribe medication.
Limiting physical activity for 4 to 6 weeks is recommended for proper healing. Limit activities like lifting anything heavy or raising your arms above your head.
Finally, swelling can last months, but the results will last a long time.
REDUCTION MAMMOPLASTY RISKS
Like any surgery, breast reduction includes risks like bruising, scarring, bleeding, blood clots, and infection. Risks specific to the reduction surgery include:
- Difficulty breastfeeding, or unable to breastfeed
- Asymmetry in breasts
- Unhappy with surgery results
- Nipple loss or loss of feeling in nipples
Note: a woman at any age with big breasts can have a boob reduction. But teenagers and young adults whose breasts are not fully developed may need a second reduction surgery years later.
HOW MUCH DOES BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY COST?
The cost of breast reduction varies significantly between patients and facilities—however, the price ranges between $5,000 to $10,000, excluding anesthesia and facility fees.
If you can prove breast reduction surgery is a medical necessity, your insurance may cover all or part of the cost. On the other hand, if you elect to have a reduction mammoplasty for cosmetic reasons, your insurance will not cover the cost.
For surgeries not covered by insurance, we offer affordable payment plans. We want you to feel your best without worrying about the price tag.
